“Broke my $500 stroller in Atlanta. We landed and the wheel was sitting right next to it. Had to run to my connecting flight with a 3 wheel stroller,” another person commented.
A similar video went viral earlier this year, when a baggage handler at the Honolulu Airport was recorded throwing suitcases down the chute.

I just traveled two weeks ago with a double maclaren stroller, no bag and it didn't get beat up at all. You stroll it down to where you get on the plane and someone physically places the stroller in the belly of the plane, then they bring it back up to where you get off the plane so it doesn't go on a belt and get beat up. I would say skip the bag, chances are you won't have time to get it in and out of the bag while trying to get on/off the plane. I've never seen a stroller in a travel bag unless it is being checked.
A friend of mine faces problems every-time he travelled with strollers and carseats, whether they were checked baggage or gate-checked. On my most recent trip, he used a carseat bag (which wasn't cheap itself) for their Britax, and the bag got really beat up and the wheels broken off (made it fun to lug through the terminal along with their three year old and suitcase, but at least the seat itself was in good condition!) He says his gate checked stroller always gets really dirty, but not necessarily broken or damaged. He suggests a bag, but says wouldn't purchase a pricey one.
A stroller can be broken by an airline whilst in transit, they are pretty rough with checked strollers. And if it is not stored in a travel bag, they will often use that as an excuse to not refund you for the damage.
This has happened to a few friends of mine and frustratingly they had to bear the loss. We have a bugaboo too and will be doing lots of international travel so have invested in a travel bag.
What you also need to do is bring a bungee cord to double secure it. Strollers can be damaged if they pop open en route. Imagine some baggage guy trying to fold yours' back down... Most strollers only have a flimsy latch so when you get to the door of the aircraft, fold your stroller and then wrap the bungee cord around it, either inside or outside the bag (over it might be better). Be sure to have your name and address on it somewhere and make sure the gate-check tag can still be seen.
Before leaving, remove cup holders, toys, padding and even the sunshade (depending on the design) from your stroller. When you leave the aircraft, exit the door where the wheelchairs and strollers are waiting (listen for announcements and/or ask as you leave) so that you don't have to walk all the way around to retrieve it!
