Bassinet vs. Crib: Differences and what to choose?

Women are excited about several things when they are pregnant, besides of course eagerly awaiting for their little one.

One of the things is to shop for baby products, and that includes things like the bassinet and crib furniture.

What is a Baby Crib?

A Crib is basically a small bed made specifically for infants and very young children. It is also known as a cot (in the UK and other counties) whereas in America, its commonly known as crib.

What is a Bassinet?

A bassinet, on the other hand, is a smaller sized bed (more portable) designed to accommodate babies from zero-months to about 4-months old.

  • A crib is bigger in size, some even convert into a toddler bed, and can last for years. As a result, they can be expensive. A bassinet on the other hand is portable, and many also come with a hood.

How to Choose a Baby Crib for Your Modern Home Decor

Over the years, the design of the Crib has undergone a sea-change. A modern crib is much more practical, comfortable, safe, and adds to the decor of your room/nursery.

Most of these usually come with a full-size bassinet, quilted bumpers and a comfy quilted mattress.

Choosing a Suitable Crib

Practical
If you have lots of space at home, you can consider an island Crib that gives the baby a 360 degree view of the room. If you want something that can be taken outdoors, you need to consider portability.

Safety
Most countries now specify safety regulations for cribs, obviously for safety of your baby. So check if it has been built as per those specifications.

Buy a sturdy one with reliable frame. Once assembled, make sure there are no exposed parts that the baby can remove as he/she grows.

Decor
Choose something that goes well with the overall decor of the room.

  • You can choose from modern, contemporary designs.
  • You may choose one that looks regal/sophisticated.
  • For portable ones, go in for one that has a canopy that can shield your baby from light/drizzle
  • You may want to choose one that has a smaller footprint, in case you live in an apartment.

  • Adjustable
Many modern cribs have an adjustable side rail so that you can comfortably remove the baby from the crib. Some even let you adjust the height of the mattress, so as the child grows, you can lower the height of the mattress.

    Versatile
You also get cribs that can be converted into a daybed, a toddler bed with guardrail, or a full-size bed. This is particularly useful if you take a long term view, as this investment can then grow along with your little one.
