Top 10 Tips on How to Run faster with a Jogging Stroller

Jogging strollers are designed in such a manner so that you can jog along with the stroller (they use better tires). But to make it run smoother along with you, there are certain things that you need to keep in mind. Here are some pointers you may want to keep in mind when using the jogging stroller.

  1. When you run with a jogging stroller you have to hold onto the stroller with both your hands, so you cannot freely swing both your arms. If that makes you uncomfortable, hold on to the stroller with one hand and keep on alternating, this allows you to swing one arm as you run.

Don’t feel comfortable holding the stroller at all while jogging? You can use the Stroll-Smart Hands Free Jogging Stroller Adaptor and don’t have to worry about holding the stroller at all.

  2. Try to maintain proper running form, run upright to avoid low back and hamstring injuries and switch arms. “When you switch, it may feel awkward initially but give your body some time to adjust.”

Aim to have your heart rate at 70 to 85 percent of your max heart rate; your max heart rate is roughly 220 minus your age.

  3. Maintain the same pace (even if its with a stroller).

If you’re working out with a jogging stroller with the intention of getting back to your post-baby body, science says you should maintain the same pace as when you’re not pushing a stroller for best results, as per a study published in PLOS One.

It means if you typically run an 12-minute mile, you must try to maintain the same time even with a stroller for optimum benefit from your workout. (it’s easiest to achieve your typical pace if you run with both hands placed on the jogging stroller versus just one).

  4. Be careful while running downhill, use your handbrake if the speed increases. Use your handbrake to slow down the stroller and to adjust your speed back to a safer level. When running downhill, flex those arms and keep the stroller close; don’t let the stroller pull you. Nearing a turn? Its always better to hold unto the stroller with both your hands when making a turn, while running or jogging.
  5. In case you’re using a wrist wrap (that attaches to the stroller), avoid letting go of your stroller. A wrist strap exists for an emergency, in case you accidentally completely leave the stroller.
  6. Check Your Posture: Avoid “the protruding booty” and do not lean your upper body weight into the handlebar. Run normally (as you would do without a stroller) and correct your alignment.
  7. Do not squeeze your hands and hold unto the stroller handlebar too tightly, as it can cause pain in your shoulders and neck. Instead of squeezing your hands, relax your wrists and allow your hands to gently wrap around the handlebar.
  8. Use your hands in tandem with your legs. Use your legs as well to propel the stroller and do not push the stroller only with your arms. Your legs are designed for running, put them to use.
  9. Make sure you do some stretching before and after completing your run.
  10. Go out on an easy course your first few times. Once you get comfortable with your new stroller, you can undertake more difficult runs and even take the stroller on some small hills.

The bottom line is that running with a jogging stroller does take a bit of practice. Take time to get used to your new jogging stroller.

More General Tips for a Great Running Experience

Here are some more useful tips from fellow runners and experts that will help you have a great workout and also have some fun along the way.

Carry lot of stuff
In general, whenever you takes kids outside, make sure you carry all the baby stuff and things that can keep them busy. Sippy cup, diaper bag, wipes, nursing cover, snacks, small toys, books and crayons. Avoid giving them your phone or tablet and get their favorite toys instead.

Put Safety First
Make sure your stroller has a safety wrist strap attached to the handlebar. Once on your jogging track, lock the front wheel to keep it from turning suddenly during your run. Make sure the child is fastened in the seat and adequately supported in the stroller.

Keep the weather in mind
Dress your kid for the weather; consider using a protective shield for windy or rainy days. On hot days, use a stroller visor or sunshield to keep them shaded.

Avoid the Traffic
Run on tracks where there are cars and trucks on the road.

Make it fun for the kids
Make it fun for your kid – count squirrels, or dogs or cats, sing songs together, wave to as many people as possible, if possible end at a playground.

Time it right to run more
Choose a time (if you can) when your little one is likely to sleep. This will allow you to get extra miles in because there’s a good chance your little one will doze off in the stroller, thanks to the motion.

For many, running a marathon is a big challenge in itself, but there are parents who now run the marathon (shorter ones) with their little ones happily seated in jogging strollers. Many such parents train alone or as part of a group of parents that train regularly with their babies and toddlers in jogging strollers.

Jogging with children is also beneficial for the kids, to get out in nature and to get some fresh air. It is important for kids to get outdoors and see green spaces and wildlife. Besides, you can also chat and laugh and sing songs and have an enjoyable time.

There are many parents who are passionate runners, compete in marathons and do mountain running as well; but being a parent (mom or dad) doesn’t mean you really have to give up on your other dreams and hobbies. It is now easy to go jogging with your little one safely seated in a jogging stroller.
