Silver Cross have reported good sales and profits, after it was acquired by the Chinese owner of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Today, Silver Cross prams get sold in the UK, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Asia Pacific regions.
In recent years, Silver Cross have become a favorite of affluent families in China’s booming cities. The company opened a shop in Shanghai’s Hang Lung Plaza last year, where its handmade Aston Martin Surf 2 edition, costing £3,000, is said to be particularly popular. Based on the same design as the £1.2 million Aston Martin One-77 coupe, it features an ultra-soft Italian suede interior, leather-trimmed push bar and aluminium alloy wheels.
France has banned Silver Cross prams from being sold in their shops, in what the firm’s owner has described as a blatant example of European Union free trade rules being flouted. It seems the French are trying to support their own manufacturers over a foreign one.
Alan Halsall, who bought the company out of administration in 2002, said French trade officials had ruled that the prams did not meet their own safety requirements, despite being cleared for sale under EU rules across the rest of the continent.
As a result, he was forced to spend thousands of pounds in order to ship back to Britain hundreds of Silver Cross prams the firm had distributed to 60 shops across France in anticipation of them being allowed to go on the market. He suspects the ruling was imposed as a result of lobbying by France’s own pram manufacturers to prevent Silver Cross from threatening their sales.
