What are Bunting Bags / Footmuffs: Introduction

Infants and toddlers have to be kept warm and dry, especially in the winter months.

Now, if you want to step out of your house with your baby, either you need to take layers of clothing or a puffy jacket, or just use a baby bunting bag (or a footmuff).

You can buy a footmuff/bunting bag separately, which is far more convenient.

It’s kind of like wrapping your baby in a plush sleeping bag. Just tuck the baby inside the footmuff to keep them warm when you go out for a walk on those chilly days.

It is a tapered, quilted accessory that placed at the foot of the stroller or car seat.

  • Most bunting bags are available for children – newborn to 2-years old.
  • These are made of high quality material that keeps the child warm and are easy to clean. Most are water resistant.
  • No more layering blankets that constantly slip off your child’s stroller.
  • Adjustable hood allows you to easily customize the fit around your little one’s head.
  • Smooth zippers along the side, equipped with non-slip material on the back to ensure it stays in place when placed in the stroller.
  • Additional fastening hoops on each side may be provided for a secure fit.

In addition to jackets, gloves, you should also consider buying a footmuff (or bunting bag) for your little one. These are versatile enough to be used with car seats, strollers, joggers, and bike trailers.

Difference between a footmuff and a bunting bag

Both footmuff and a bunting bag practically serve the same purpose, to keep your little one warm during winter.

  • Footmuff: Most footmuffs also have extensions, so that it can be raised further to cover the entire body of the baby.
  • Bunting Bags: Bunting bags come with slots for straps to anchor the bunting to the seat.

Things to look for

Bunting bags are compatible with most 5-pt harness systems and systems that include a lap belt.

Features like dual zips make it easier to pull out a sleeping baby, removable top provides easy temperature control, pull-in hoods provide extra comfort.

Best Stroller Bunting Bags/Footmuffs: Reviews

CozyMe Universal Footmuff

cozyme universal footmuffThe first thing I noticed on the CozyMe Stroller Footmuff was how soft and thick the inside lining feels. It’s roomy enough for my tall 21-month-old, and I can see it lasting another winter. The zippers open from both the top and bottom, which is super handy for quick diaper checks or adjusting her shoes without taking the whole thing off.

That said, it’s not perfect. On the smaller stroller, it tends to slide down a bit since the straps don’t hold it as firmly, and I wish the foot area had a wipe-clean lining — muddy shoes are a pain. Also, it would’ve been nice if the hood cinched a bit tighter on really windy days. But honestly, these are small issues considering the overall quality.

The fabric feels durable, the exterior is definitely water-resistant, and it washes easily. This one feels thicker and more comfortable, and is available at nearly half the price of a Bugaboo Footmuff.

For compact or travel strollers, you might find it a bit bulky (offers better fit to bigger full-sized sized strollers such as Thule, BOB). But for cold-weather walks or winter naps on the go, this footmuff is a cozy little lifesaver.

JJ Cole Original Infant Bundle Me

This Bundle Me is designed for children up to 12 months or 21 pounds, whichever comes first. The exterior is made out of soft yet durable fleece material while the inside is made of a thick faux sheepskin. There are openings for three and five point harnesses, which should cover most strollers so baby can be extra secure, even on bumpy roads. The entire unit is also machine-washable (on cold cycle, tumble dry on low).

Removable top for easy temperature control
Machine washable.

Skip Hop Stroll and Go Three-Season Footmuff

The Skip Hop Footmuff is a versatile and practical solution for keeping little ones warm and cozy during outdoor adventures. Installation is super quick (under five minutes), and once it’s on, it stays put. What I really love is the snap-on winter layer — I can remove it instantly when we go indoors or when the weather warms up a bit. It’s also been surprisingly rain- and wind-resistant, which is a huge plus for those slushy school runs.

The inner fabric is soft and plush, it’s wind and water resistant, bottom unzips for dirty shoes, and I especially love the built-in hood – eliminates the need for extra hats or scarves. I also loved that the padded part snaps off easily when the weather warms up, providing just the right amount of protection.

My only minor complaint is that the snaps for the extra layer could be sturdier — they occasionally pop open when I’m adjusting things in a hurry. And for younger or smaller babies, it might feel a bit roomy at first. But honestly, I see that as a plus because it’ll last another season easily.

If you live somewhere cold or windy and do regular walks, this footmuff is a lifesaver. It’s worth every penny for the quality, versatility, and warmth it provides. It might be overkill for mild climates, but for real winter weather, it’s worth every penny.

7AM Enfant Stroller Blanket

7AM Enfant Stroller BlanketThe 7AM Enfant stroller blanket is a super-cozy stroller footmuff with excellent thermal insulation and features such as ergonomic hood, waterproof finish, five-point harness openings. This footmuff is priced on the higher side but has good features.

Zippered extension at the bottom allows you to use the product from the child’s infancy to toddlerhood (6 months to 4 years). It stays in place, is washable, and has a useful front pocket.

Word of Caution: Using with a Car Seat

While bunting bags are safe to use, it is recommended that a stroller bunting bag is not used with a car seat (please read safety instructions).

Using the sleeping bag style bunting in a stroller is fine but you should avoid it in a car seat unless the manufacturer themselves sell a bunting designed for the car seat.

Car manufacturers usually discourage owners to add items such as bunting bags to your baby’s car seat, or anything quilted and thick under your baby in a car seat, because it poses safety risks (risk of suffocation).

Don’t use bags, pads or any other items unless they are part of your car seat or are sold by the same manufacturer. Furthermore, bunting bags haven’t been tested for use with car seats, so not enough evidence exists suggesting that they can be used safely in these instances.
